What is Pathways?

Pathways offers interdisciplinary, family-centered therapeutic services to promote long-term success to people with Down syndrome. The Pathways team includes an occupational therapist (OT), a speech-language pathologist (SLP), and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The therapy team works by bringing together their unique yet complementary perspectives to help support skill acquisition across the home and community. Pathways utilizes the Down Syndrome Innovations’ Lifespan Framework to guide goals and interventions across services.

From in-depth comprehensive programming designed to provide education and strategies to caregivers, to direct programming designed to address a specific area of need, Pathways offers a variety of services to meet the needs of people with Down syndrome and their families.  The Pathways team also works with other Down Syndrome Innovations staff to help generalize skills into group programming and beyond.

At Down Syndrome Innovations, the term “self-advocates” is used to refer to people with Down syndrome. This is intentional because we want our participants to ultimately find their voice, have their own dreams, and make their own choices.

Is Pathways right for my family?

If you or your loved one has a diagnosis of Down syndrome, Pathways has something to offer. Services include a range from working with self-advocates to supporting caregivers. Working from a strength-based perspective, Pathways does not require standardized assessment scores to determine eligibility. The Pathways team believes that everyone is a lifelong learner and deserves unlimited opportunities for growth. Pathways services are designed to meet the unique needs of each family.

Pathways Portal

After completing the Pathways enrollment process, your family gains access to the Pathways portal for life! This tool is a one-stop, online tool for scheduling Pathways appointments, communicating with the Pathways team, storing Pathways documentation, and accessing individualized therapeutic resources and materials. Your family is encouraged to upload IEPs, medical reports, videos, and/or photos that help the Pathways team further address your family’s unique priorities and needs.

Pathways Clinic Location & Hours

Pathways clinic hours are comparable to pediatrician hours: Standard weekday business with occasional evening clinic hours, and this may require missing school hours for appointments. Scheduling can be done months in advance to secure preferred dates. Upon request, a letter of Pathways attendance can be provided to the school.

All services provided on-site occur at 5916 Dearborn Street Mission, KS 66202 unless stated otherwise by the lead therapist.

Evaluation

Single Evaluation

Informal assessment, involving one therapist focused on a targeted area of development, to gain information on current level of development, medical history, areas of growth, caregiver priorities and concerns, in order to set goals and determine necessary interventions.

Therapeutic Small Groups

Social Engagement

Social Engagement focuses on providing a supported environment where self-advocates can learn and practice social skills. Utilizing group instruction, a member of the therapy team meets with self-advocates of similar ages and skills to work on initiating conversations, conversational turn-taking, staying on topic, understanding hidden rules, and so much more.

Ready, Set, Regulate

Therapeutic small group, designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and targeted for children in elementary school and early middle school. The goal of the group is to learn and practice social skills such as taking turns, following group instructions, and managing big emotions.
